“I Just Called To Say Thank You.”

She was terrified to make the phone call.

A slave to the diplomat who brought her to the United States from the Philippines, all Amalia knew of the country was 24-hour video surveillance, verbal abuse and long hours scrubbing toilets behind locked doors. Could she trust the people on the other end of the line? Her English was broken. Would they understand her plea for help?

But the phone number was all she had; she was painfully aware of that. She mustered courage and dialed.

In her Washington D.C. office, Vanessa Chauhan was waiting by the phone.

“National Human Trafficking Resource Center,” she said. Her voice was friendly, comforting. “How may I help you?”

That call was the start of a months-long relationship that would support the Filipino woman through the process of escaping modern-day slavery and building a new life for herself.

How Many Slaves Produced Your Seder?

Rabbis for Human Rights-North America, has partnered with Slavery Footprint to produce an activity for Passover based on the larger Slavery Footprint survey. It can be downloaded from our website for free. Ask your seder guests the question: How many slaves produced the goods on our table? Challenge them to commit to take action.

As the seder begins, we say metaphorically, “This year, we are slaves. Next year, may we be free people.” Let us hope that by next Passover, our feasts of liberation will be made without slave labor and that more people will be free.

What can I do?

When people hear about human trafficking, they want to act. But the issue is so big, it can be paralyzing. “I can’t solve the problem, so I won’t do anything.” Have you felt that way?

What about small steps you can take toward freedom today?

A from a California InterVarsity chapter, miles away from the Price of Life Invitational in New York City, heard about the campaign, shared the video with her InterVarsity chapter, and invited people to come learn more about human trafficking over tea. You could do that.
Earlier today we posted a link to our upcoming LOGOFF workshop, where we’ll brainstorm around an app to help consumers make good choices. Would you or a friend like to come? You could do that.
World Vision’s ACT:S site offers dozens of cool posters and other resources designed to motivate and encourage students to seek justice. What if you found one that speaks to you and shared it on your website, blog, facebook page or twitter?You could do that.

You don’t have to do everything, and you don’t have to do all you will ever do today. But you can do something, and you can do something today. What will you do?
